Large fire containing tires burning in Montgomery County, multiple Moore County tankers on scene

Firefighters from four different counties are on the scene of a large fire involving a pile of tires in Montgomery County. The fire started around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday off of Lighthouse Church Road south of Candor.

The fire is expected to burn for most of the day. Crews were using foam to try to smother the fire, however flames could be seen coming back minutes later.

The fire burned a small area of nearby woods, but is now contained to the pile of tires.

Crews from Montgomery County immediately called mutual aid units from Moore County. Moore County News saw tanker units from West End, Eagle Springs, Robbins, Aberdeen, Crains Creek, Cypress Pointe, Whispering Pines, Seven Lakes, Southern Pines and Pinebluff. A tanker from Richmond County was also called in. A unit from Deep River in Lee County was on the scene providing the foam.

The fire continues to burn as of 11:45 a.m., no cause has been released at this time.
