Pinehurst Resort is expanding once again, announcing plans Monday for the construction of Pinehurst No. 11, a new championship course designed by the acclaimed team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The course will be built on the historic Pinehurst Sandmines property, with construction set to begin later this year and an opening slated for Fall 2027.
The announcement marks another major milestone in the ongoing transformation of the 900-acre Sandmines site, where mining operations once extracted sand for decades. The area’s rugged terrain—marked by spoil piles, ridges, and reclaimed natural features—caught the attention of Coore & Crenshaw, who are returning to Pinehurst nearly 15 years after their restoration of the legendary Pinehurst No. 2.
“It’s such a wonderful site just because of its inherent character,” said Coore, noting how nature has reclaimed the man-made features left behind from the site’s mining history and its time as The Pit Golf Links. “This land is extraordinarily interesting for golf.”
No. 11 will sit adjacent to Tom Doak’s Pinehurst No. 10, which opened in 2024 to critical acclaim for its bold elevation changes and sweeping views. While No. 10 plays big and wide, Coore & Crenshaw’s vision for No. 11 is more intimate—a course that winds through forest, across mounds, and over quirky ridges.
“The two courses really couldn’t be more different, and we love that,” said Tom Pashley, president of Pinehurst Resort. “Their contrasting designs showcase just how varied and dynamic golf in the Sandhills can be.”
Coore, a North Carolina native, said the land evokes imagery more commonly associated with Ireland or Scotland. “We’re far from the sea, but the ridges and contours here make you feel like you could be playing on a links course across the Atlantic.”
The addition of Pinehurst No. 11 comes as development at Sandmines continues at a brisk pace. A 6,000-square-foot pro shop and locker room is expected to open in June, followed by a restaurant and bar in August. Lodging options for guests are also in the works, with plans to accommodate overnight stays on-site by the end of 2027.
Pinehurst owner and CEO Bob Dedman Jr. said the growing Sandmines complex reflects a broader vision for the resort’s future. “We want Pinehurst Sandmines to be a special place—not just for Pinehurst, but for the game of golf,” Dedman said. “With Coore & Crenshaw leading No. 11 and Tom Doak already making his mark with No. 10, we believe we’re building something that will stand the test of time.”
