Driver uninjured after hydroplaning crash on U.S. 1

A driver walked away without injuries after a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon that left a car hidden in heavy brush off U.S. Highway 1 in Southern Pines.

According to the Southern Pines Police Department, a white sedan hydroplaned while traveling southbound near the Pennsylvania Avenue on-ramp. Wet road conditions and speed are believed to have contributed to the crash, police said.

An older man who witnessed the vehicle leave the roadway called 911 but was unsure of the exact location, telling dispatchers he thought the incident occurred somewhere between Morganton and Midland Roads. He remained on scene and assisted the Southern Pines Fire Department in searching for the car.

After about 30 minutes, the vehicle was located off the on-ramp to U.S. 1 South from Pennsylvania Avenue, concealed by dense brush.

Police confirmed the driver was not injured.
