An estimated 8,000 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into Aberdeen Creek over the weekend, according to a press release from the Town of Aberdeen.
The discharge occurred Saturday, Aug. 8, near the intersection of North Sandhills Boulevard and Bion Butler Road.
According to the town, the Utilities Department was notified of the discharge at approximately 6 p.m. Officials said efforts were made to mitigate the wastewater release.
The system returned to normal service at approximately 9 p.m., and cleanup and sanitizing efforts were conducted, according to the town.
The town did not provide information in the release about what caused the discharge.
Under North Carolina law, owners or operators of wastewater collection or treatment systems are required to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surface waters.
