A local 18-year-old male suffered life-threatening injuries following a violent single-vehicle crash Sunday evening on Bellview Road outside of Robbins.

The crash happened shortly after 6 p.m. in the 600 block of Bellview Road.

According to initial findings, the driver of a Mazda 3 was traveling along Bellview Road towards Plank Road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway while navigating a curve. Investigators said the car struck a culvert, causing it to overturn.

Authorities said the vehicle then went airborne through a yard before landing in a wooded area nearby. The car hit several trees before coming to a stop.

The impact was so severe that the vehicle’s engine separated from the car and was found approximately 100 feet from the vehicle’s final resting location. Authorities also noted the steering wheel ended up on the passenger side of the vehicle following the crash.

According to investigators, the vehicle was traveling at least 85 mph at the time of the crash.

The 18-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle and transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews initially requested a medical helicopter to respond to the scene, but weather conditions, including thunderstorms in the area, prevented the aircraft from flying.

A resident whose property the vehicle traveled through told Moore County News that the impact shook his house.

The crash remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
