A hit-and-run crash in Aberdeen led to the arrest of a local man on multiple charges, including driving under the influence and felony drug possession.

The Aberdeen Police Department announced the arrest of James Caney Spence, 59, of Aberdeen, after officers responded to the Meadow Ridge neighborhood on May 20 around the time of the incident. Upon arrival, officers located the victim’s vehicle, which had been struck, and soon after identified the suspect vehicle and its driver as Spence, according to Aberdeen Police.

During the investigation, officers noted significant signs of impairment from Spence, leading to field testing and his arrest on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence. Other charges include leaving the scene of an accident and unsafe movement.

After being medically cleared at Moore Regional Hospital, Spence was transported to the Moore County Jail. During a routine secondary search, officers reportedly discovered a controlled substance on his person, according to police. That discovery resulted in an additional charge of felony possession of a controlled substance on jail premises.

Spence was brought before a Moore County magistrate and issued a $7,500 secured bond.
