A school bus carrying Union Pines High School students was involved in a crash with a truck pulling a trailer Wednesday afternoon on Vass-Carthage Road.

The wreck happened around 4:10 p.m. when the truck, which was hauling a trailer loaded with a tractor, ran off the right side of the road. Troopers said the driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to fishtail. The truck then crossed the center line and struck the westbound school bus.

The bus ran off the road and came to rest in a ditch. 22 people, including the driver, were on board.

No major injuries were reported, though four students were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Several others were picked up by their parents and taken for additional medical care. The bus driver was not transported.

The truck driver was evaluated at the scene and said he would take himself to the hospital. Both the truck and trailer overturned in the crash.

Vass-Carthage Road was shut down for about two and a half hours and reopened around 6:45 p.m.

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to maintain lane control.
