Smoke could be seen for miles as firefighters from Montgomery County and Moore County worked to extinguish a large fire south of Candor.

A large abandoned building off of Highway 220 Alternate South burst into flames Wednesday after 2 p.m. The flames spread to other structures near the building, as well as surrounding woods and grass. It appeared that stacks of hay bales were being stored inside the large building. It took a little over an hour to bring knock down the flames, however crews remained on the scene through the night hitting hot spots.

Fire crews from Biscoe, Candor, Mt. Creek, Eagle Springs, West End, and Seven Lakes were all working together to put out the fire. The N.C. Forest Service brought equipment to the scene to create a fire line to prevent the flames from spreading more in the woods.

Highway 220 Alternate South was shut down for an extended period.
