Police: Driver travels wrong direction on U.S. 1 after fleeing crash scene, arrested on several charges

A woman was arrested after she allegedly drove the wrong way on U.S. 1 after rear-ending another vehicle near Vass on Wednesday. Authorities confirmed to Moore County News that 26-year-old Kirsten McLeod of Carthage was the driver arrested.

According to law enforcement officials, a Chevy Impala was rear-ended by a Kia Sportage driven by McLeod while traveling north on U.S. 1. The parties involved pulled into a parking lot to wait for emergency crews, when McLeod left the scene. McLeod turned left out of the parking lot heading southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. 1. A firefighter saw this happening and was able to pass along information to dispatch, following the Kia from the southbound lanes. The firefighter reported there were several close calls with other vehicles.

Moore County Sheriff Deputies, Southern Pines Police, and Troopers responded in an effort to stop McLeod. Southern Pines Police were able to get the her stopped at the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge, 4.5 miles from the location of the crash. McLeod was placed into custody by SPPD until Troopers could arrive.

Moore County News was on the scene when McLeod was transferred to SHP custody, and was seen staggering around. Troopers say the she refused to do a breathalyzer.

A post on BustedNewspaper.com says McLeod is now facing several charges including DWI, reckless driving to endanger, failure to report crash, hit-and-run, speeding, driving the wrong way on dual lane highway, failure to maintain lane control, and failure to reduce speed. McLeod posted a $10,000 bond.

The occupants of the Impala were not injured in the crash.
