A shooting in Cameron late Saturday night left one person dead after what authorities say began with a suspect firing at a passing vehicle along Carthage Street.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched around 10:42 p.m. to the 200 block of Carthage Street (Highway 24-27) after a motorist reported that a person walking along the roadway had fired a gun, striking their vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle were not injured.
A deputy arrived within about two minutes and located an armed individual matching the description in the 400 block of Carthage Street. Authorities identified the suspect as 52-year-old Harvey Franklin Hardy of Cameron.
According to the sheriff’s office, Hardy fled on foot and ran around a nearby building, with the deputy in pursuit. During the brief foot chase, Hardy fired his weapon. The deputy returned fire, and Hardy was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was not injured.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation responded and is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure. Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields was also on scene.
