Firefighters battle flames in bitter cold overnight near Carthage

Fire crews battled a fully involved barn fire overnight outside of Carthage, forcing a section of Niagara Carthage Road to shut down for several hours.

The fire happened in the 2200 block of Niagara Carthage Road just before 1 a.m. When the first fire unit arrived on scene, crews found a large barn structure completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters worked in extremely cold conditions. Outside temperatures at the time were around 16 degrees, with wind chill values near 10 degrees, adding to the challenge of containing the blaze.

Officials have not released details about what was inside the barn or what may have caused the fire.

The fire remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
