A fatal single-vehicle crash shut down a part of Highway 15-501 south of Carthage Monday during the busy morning commute.

Authorities say just before 7 a.m., a Honda Accord was traveling southbound on 15-501 when the driver veered across the center line, ran off the opposite side of the road, and hit several trees. Investigators say there is no indication why the driver veered off the roadway.

The young male driver, a local to Moore County, was the only occupant of the vehicle and died at the scene.

The crash prompted the closure of the highway’s northbound lane, although traffic was still allowed to flow through. Southbound vehicles were diverted onto Brinkley Road while emergency crews were on scene.

The roadway was completely reopened around 9:30 a.m.
