A head-on crash near the Moore County and Montgomery County line left one man seriously injured and shut down Highway 24-27 for about an hour and a half early Wednesday morning.

The two-vehicle crash happened around midnight on Highway 24-27 near Ruth Road. According to troopers investigating the crash, a Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound when the male driver crossed the center line.

A female driver of a Nissan Altima traveling westbound attempted to avoid the Corolla. Troopers said the driver of the Altima veered off the right side of the road, but the vehicles collided along the white line of the westbound lane.

The male driver of the Toyota Corolla was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. A medical helicopter landed in a field near the intersection of Highway 24-27 and Big Oak Church Road, where crews had set up a landing zone.

The female driver of the Nissan Altima was taken to Moore Regional Hospital by ambulance.

Highway 24-27 was shut down in both directions until about 1:30 a.m.. while emergency crews worked the scene and troopers conducted their investigation.

The crash remains under investigation.
