Moore County Schools has named three new principals, effective July 1, 2025, as part of its continued focus on academic excellence and strong leadership.

Matthew McLean will become principal of Pinecrest High School, moving from his current role at West Pine Elementary. With more than 25 years in education, McLean has led schools at both the elementary and high school levels and was named North Carolina Athletic Director of the Year in 2019.

Dr. Amy O’Neill has been promoted to principal of West Pine Elementary, where she currently serves as assistant principal. An Army veteran and longtime Moore County resident, O’Neill brings a wide range of experience and holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership.

MacKenzie Sovey will lead McDeeds Creek Elementary, returning to a school where she previously taught. She currently serves as assistant principal at Union Pines High School and is known for her focus on positive school culture and data-driven leadership.

Superintendent Dr. Tim Locklair praised the appointees, calling them “some of the best leaders in the state and country,” and said their leadership will help students “reach their full potential.”
