A 31-year-old woman died Friday morning after suffering a medical emergency while in custody at the Moore County Detention Center, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said detention staff found Phylis McCrimmon unresponsive in her cell around 9 a.m. and immediately began administering emergency aid. First responders with Moore County EMS transported her to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

“Our detention staff responded quickly and did everything within their power to provide emergency care,” Sheriff Ronnie Fields said in a statement. “I am proud of their professionalism and the urgency with which they acted. Sadly, despite their efforts, the outcome was not what we hoped for.”
According to law enforcement, McCrimmon had been jailed following a police chase near Carthage in April reaching speeds up to 90 miles per hour.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into McCrimmon’s death, as is standard protocol in such cases.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to McCrimmon’s family and loved ones.
