A 52-year-old woman died early Thursday morning after being found unresponsive inside the Moore County Detention Center, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
Detention center staff responded around 3 a.m. after inmate Christy Elizabeth White used the intercom in her cell to report that she was having difficulty breathing. When staff arrived at the cell, they found White unresponsive on her bed.
Staff immediately initiated emergency protocols and began life-saving measures. Moore County EMS responded and continued those efforts, but White was pronounced dead.
White had been booked into the Moore County Detention Center less than 14 hours earlier, at 1:24 p.m. Wednesday. According to the Sheriff’s Office, she was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia and was being held under a $25,000 secured bond.
Sheriff Ronnie Fields extended condolences to White’s family and loved ones.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into White’s death, which the Sheriff’s Office said is standard protocol. The SBI will determine the official findings and circumstances surrounding her death.
No additional information about the cause of White’s death was released.
