A high-speed collision involving two vehicles shut down the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 at Albany Avenue around 4 p.m. Sunday. Authorities tell Moore County News that the occupants of both vehicles are family members.

Troopers investigating the crash say that a Honda hatchback and a Chevy SS were traveling northbound at speeds of at least 100 miles per hour when the driver of the Honda lost control. The Honda crashed into the Chevy, causing both vehicles to veer off the right side of the road and slam into several trees, according to investigators. The force of the impact split the Honda in half.

The driver of the Honda, a local 22-year-old man, was airlifted to a trauma center from a landing zone set up at the Pinebluff ball field. Troopers told Moore County News that he underwent surgeries for brain and spinal trauma at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. A passenger in the Chevy was transported to the hospital. Both of their conditions were considered life-threatening at the time they were transported. The driver of the Chevy was evaluated by medics at the scene but did not need to be hospitalized. Authorities confirmed that the Honda’s driver is the son of the Chevy’s driver.

Emergency crews were on the scene for several hours with the roadway closed until crews cleared the scene. The N.C. State Highway Patrol says the crash is still under investigation.
