On Monday, Fort Liberty was officially renamed back to its original name, Fort Bragg, following a memorandum signed by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Established in 1918, the base was originally named after General Braxton Bragg, a Confederate Army officer during the Civil War. But in 2021, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act, prohibiting military installations from being named after individuals who voluntarily served or held leadership roles in the Confederate States of America.

Secretary Hegseth stated that the rename does not go against the 2021 law since the new Bragg name is in recognition of Private First Class Roland Bragg, who “served with great distinction during World War II,” according the memo ordering the name change.

Fort Bragg is one of the largest military installations in the world, housing 57,000 troops and serving as the headquarters for the Airborne and Special Operations Forces, according to its website.
