A Toyota SUV smashed through a building on U.S. Highway 1 on Wednesday afternoon after the female driver suffered a medical emergency. Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue arrived to the scene near the intersection with Camp Easter Road just before 4:45 p.m.
According to Troopers investigating the crash, witnesses reported the 41-year-old driver from Cameron was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when she veered off the left side of the road into the median, over corrected, and crossed the northbound lanes. Once off the roadway, the vehicle took out a mailbox, barely missed a telephone pole, crashed through the front right corner of a building, traveled through the building, and exited the building’s back corner before coming to a stop. The vehicle traveled over 300 feet before coming to a stop. No other vehicles were involved, and the driver was the only occupant.
Troopers says it appears the woman suffered a medical emergency before veering off the road. Moore County EMS rushed the driver to the hospital by ambulance. There is no word on her condition at this time.
The Toyota had significant damage to it, including a shattered windshield with slash mark through it. The front end and sides were dented and scratched. The airbags of the Toyota never deployed.
