Pinehurst targets speeding with increased patrols and driver education

Drivers in Pinehurst will see increased patrols and targeted traffic enforcement as part of a new campaign aimed at reducing speeding on village streets.

The Village of Pinehurst and Pinehurst Police Department have launched “Slow Down, Pinehurst,” combining education, traffic data and enforcement to encourage drivers to follow posted speed limits.

As part of those efforts, police use portable speed display signs that show motorists how fast they are traveling. The signs can be moved to different locations and collect data to help officers assess vehicle speeds and driving patterns.

Residents who have concerns about speeding can request a portable speed display sign through the MyVOP app. Those requests help the village identify locations where additional monitoring may be beneficial.

“Traffic safety is something we all have a role in,” Pinehurst Police Chief Glen Webb said. “For drivers, it can be as simple as paying attention to your speed and making that small adjustment behind the wheel. We want people to slow down, follow the posted speed limit, and help us keep Pinehurst’s streets safe.”

According to the department, speeding is particularly concerning on streets shared by vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and golf carts. Higher speeds leave drivers less time to recognize hazards and react, increase stopping distances and can make crashes more severe.

Police are asking motorists to watch their speed, eliminate distractions and allow enough travel time to reach their destinations without rushing.
