Person killed after being struck by train in Pinehurst

One person was struck and killed by a train Thursday evening around 8 p.m. in Pinehurst, with the victim pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred near The Cradle course, close to Pinehurst Resort & Country Club.

According to a press release from the Village of Pinehurst, the train involved was operated by Carolina Western Railroad. The individual’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Officials said the train, estimated to be approximately two miles in length, is blocking multiple roadway intersections in the area, causing significant traffic disruptions. The blockage includes the intersection of Morganton Road and N.C. Highway 5.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes as emergency crews remain on scene.
