A man that was caught on video stealing roadside political signs for the Harris/Walz campaign has been arrested, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. The video that started circulating on Facebook on Monday, show a man walking along U.S. Highway 24-27 in broad daylight yanking two political signs out of the ground before he walks out of frame.
Moore County News was told this has happened to the property owner before, so they placed a camera to catch nefarious acts. The property owner made a report with the sheriff’s office on Monday.
The Moore County Sheriff’s Office announced they have arrested James Wesley Greenfield Jr., 64, of Harnett County. Greenfield was charged with two counts of misdemeanor larceny of political signs. He was released under a written promise to appear in Moore County District Court on November 14, 2024.
This comes just days after a candidate for the North Carolina House of Representatives was arrested after allegedly stealing campaign signs in Seven Lakes. Lowell Simon was spotted by a deputy taking signs on October 10, 2024 along Seven Lakes Drive, and arrested the next morning. Simon, a democrat, is running against Republican Representative Neal Jackson for the seat representing House District 78, which includes parts of Moore County. Simon, at the time, was the Chair of the Moore County Democratic Party, a position he resigned from on Monday.
Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields reminds the public that the theft and/or damaging of campaign signs is against the law in North Carolina. “These laws are enforced impartially, regardless of political affiliation, to ensure fairness during election periods. Sheriff Fields emphasizes that the Moore County Sheriff’s Office will continue to uphold the law in all such cases,” the MCSO said in the press release.
