A fire that damaged the public bathrooms at Downtown Park in Southern Pines on Sunday night has been ruled arson, according to fire officials.

The blaze was reported just after 9:30 p.m. in the 100 block of South Ashe Street. Firefighters from Southern Pines arrived quickly to find heavy black smoke pouring from the men’s bathroom in the park’s restroom building.

Crews were able to knock down the flames within minutes, containing the fire before it could spread further. Responding agencies from across Moore County, as well as personnel from Fort Bragg, were dispatched to assist.

Southern Pines Fire Chief Mike Cameron confirmed the fire was intentionally set.

The park was closed at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported, but the building sustained smoke and fire damage. The extent of the damage and cost of repairs have not yet been released.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Southern Pines Police Department.
