Travelers heading southbound on NC Highway 15-501 in Carthage were detoured because of a head-on crash on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened at the Monroe Street (Highway 24-27) crossover to northbound Hwy 15-501. Authorities say the driver of a Ford Focus attempted to cross into the path of a Ford Bronco.

Carthage Fire & Rescue set up a detour sending southbound travelers to veer right onto Monroe Street, then turn left at the stop light at Glendon-Carthage Road to connect back to Hwy 15-501 southbound.

The drivers were the only occupant of their vehicle, and both were transported to the hospital by Moore County EMS.

The highway reopened around an hour after the crash.
