An investigation is ongoing into a shooting involving a Greensboro Police Department officer that left one man dead.

According to Greensboro Police, officers were called to the 3000 block of Lawndale Drive Saturday just before 8:30 a.m., after a report of an armed subject. When officers arrived, they found 31-year-old Gerald Pinckney with what appeared to be a handgun.

The officer gave repeated commands for Pinckney to drop the weapon, but he ignored those commands and began to walk toward the officer while continuing to display the weapon, GPD says. That’s when, according to investigators, the officer fired their gun, striking Pinckney.

Officers at the scene rendered aid until an EMS unit could arrive at the scene. Pinckney was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation, as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The GPD has placed the officer on administrative duty, and will conduct an internal investigation to see if all department policies were followed.
