Fire breaks out at Southern Pines home as storms move through area

Firefighters responded to a structure fire in Southern Pines on Sunday afternoon as severe weather moved through the area.

The call was dispatched at 1:41 p.m. for a structure fire in the 200 block of Sheldon Drive.

Smoke was showing from the roof of the structure as the first fire unit arrived on the scene.

The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Heavy lightning was reported in the area around the time of the fire, but it was not immediately known whether the weather played a role.
