A driver was hospitalized Saturday night following a dramatic single-vehicle crash on Highway 15-501 at the Monroe Street crossover, an incident witnessed by Carthage police.

Officers initially reported the driver as careless and reckless before the crash. The driver of a Chevy Trailblazer was seen veering through a grass median and into oncoming traffic before coming to a stop, according to police.

The driver, the sole occupant, was transported to the hospital. Authorities now say a medical episode may have contributed to the incident.

The southbound lane of Highway 15-501 was closed while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash remains under investigation.
