A portion of North McNeill Street in downtown Carthage will close beginning Monday, Sept. 21, as the town takes steps to address traffic safety concerns at the intersection with Barrett Street.
The Town of Carthage said a barricade will be placed on the North McNeill Street side of the intersection, preventing northbound traffic on McNeill Street from traveling through the intersection.
According to the town, the closure comes after ongoing concerns about drivers misunderstanding the traffic pattern at Barrett and North McNeill streets. Traffic on Barrett Street is controlled by stop signs, while drivers on North McNeill Street do not stop.
Town staff said they have observed numerous instances of drivers on Barrett Street failing to stop or apparently assuming traffic on North McNeill Street also has a stop sign. The town said those situations have resulted in multiple near misses and at least one crash.
The town did not specify in its notice how long the closure is expected to remain in place.
