A two-vehicle crash along U.S. Highway 1 near Vass sent one car hurtling into a local business early Thursday, leaving a gaping hole in the front of J.B. Short Carpets and heavy damage throughout the store.
The wreck happened near the intersection with Youngs Road around 6 a.m. According to officials, a Honda sedan and a second vehicle were both heading north on U.S. 1 when the Honda sideswiped the other vehicle. The impact sent both cars off the right side of the highway, where they struck an embankment and went airborne.
The Honda crashed through the front of J.B. Short Carpets, coming to rest in the middle of the showroom. The second vehicle landed in a ditch just outside the store.
According to Troopers, the driver of the Honda fled the scene after the crash but has since turned himself in. He is now facing several charges, including speeding, leaving the scene of a crash, driving with a suspended license, and careless and reckless driving.
Miraculously, no one was injured in the crash. The business was closed at the time.
A Moore County building inspector has already assessed the damage, which officials describe as “extensive.” A representative for J.B. Short Carpets told Moore County News at the scene that the store will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. Moore County News will continue to follow this developing story.
