The male driver of a refrigerated box truck was transported to the hospital after the vehicle overturned on U.S. 1 near Southern Pines.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 near Youngs Road. Fire crews closed the outside southbound lane while the driver was evaluated and loaded into the ambulance.

The N.C. Highway Patrol says the box truck driver slammed on brakes and swerved to avoid another vehicle that pulled into his lane. His truck then went into a skid and overturned. According to Troopers, the vehicle that caused the crash did not stop.

The driver of the box truck was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but did not appear to be injured.
