A state trooper and a deputy were injured by shrapnel during an hourslong standoff in Candor on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Moore County deputies were among the agencies that responded after officers came under gunfire at a residence.

The standoff ended around 3 p.m. when the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. His condition was not released.

Montgomery County dispatchers received a call for a welfare check in the Brutonville community at approximately 10:12 a.m. A second call shortly afterward reported a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Candor police officers and North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers responded to a residence in the 100 block of Wiley Drive, where they came under gunfire, according to the sheriff’s office.

Additional law enforcement agencies responded, and officers secured the scene as the incident developed into a barricade situation. Personnel spent several hours using crisis intervention and negotiation efforts to seek a peaceful resolution.

A trooper and a deputy suffered injuries from shrapnel during the incident. Moore County News confirmed that the injured deputy was not with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy is believed to be with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, though that affiliation has not been confirmed.

Information about where the shrapnel came from, the extent of the officers’ injuries and their conditions was not released.

Responding agencies included the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Candor Police Department, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Troy Police Department and Biscoe Police Department.

Montgomery County Sheriff Pete Herron turned the investigation over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI will lead the investigation and process the crime scene.

Herron thanked responding personnel for their coordinated response and community members for their assistance. He also expressed sympathy for the family and the Brutonville community.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
