A 36-year-old Robbins man was killed in a single-vehicle crash discovered Sunday afternoon on North Howard Mill Road near George P Road.
Emergency crews were dispatched around 1:25 p.m. after a passerby noticed damage from the crash and called it in.
The Audi A6 had been traveling on North Howard Mill Road toward Randolph County when it ran off the right side of the road, struck trees and went down an embankment.
The impact was severe enough to separate the engine from the vehicle.
The man, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was still inside the vehicle when first responders arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Because of the vehicle’s location down the embankment, crews had to pull the car from the wooded area before firefighters could remove the doors and recover the man from the vehicle.
First responders said the vehicle’s engine was cold when they arrived, indicating the crash may have happened sometime before it was discovered. The exact time of the crash is unknown.
Troopers said speed was a factor in the crash. No other details about what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway have been released.
George P Road was closed while emergency crews investigated the crash and cleared the scene.
Authorities said the driver was 36 years old and lived in Robbins. His identity has not been released, although authorities said notification of next of kin has been made.
