A single-vehicle crash along Cranes Creek Road near the intersection of L Cooper Road is under investigation after the driver reportedly fled the scene Saturday afternoon.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the wreck happened just before 4:15 p.m. when a Chevy Silverado was traveling toward U.S. Highway 1 at a high rate of speed. Troopers say the driver lost control while navigating a curve, crossed the center line, and overturned into a tree line.

When first responders arrived, they found the pickup on its passenger side and facing the opposite direction of travel. Authorities noted the vehicle did not have a license plate displayed.

Tire marks could be seen along the roadway and the shoulder, showing the path where the vehicle lost control and left the pavement before crashing.

The driver, who was not at the scene when emergency crews arrived, was later identified as Daniel Ashburn, 21, of Cameron.

According to arrest records, Ashburn was taken into custody and faces 10 charges, including driving while impaired, reckless driving, hit and run, failure to report an accident, driving without liability insurance, open container of alcohol, driving without displaying a license plate, driving while license revoked, speeding, and driving left of center.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
