A home was left damaged Wednesday evening after a lightning strike sparked a fire along Lobelia Road, displacing the resident, according to fire officials.

The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of Lobelia Road, also known as Highway 690, just outside of Vass.

Investigators say lightning struck a large tree in front of the home before traveling to the roof, igniting a fire that quickly spread through the attic space. The middle section of the roof collapsed as a result of the flames, and the home also suffered significant water damage from firefighting efforts.

Crain’s Creek Fire Department responded to the scene along with Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue and several additional fire agencies from outside Moore County to assist.

One person was inside the home at the time but managed to escape safely. That individual has been displaced, officials confirmed.

Highway 690 was shut down for several hours while crews worked to contain the fire and secure the area.

No injuries were reported.
