A two-vehicle crash involving a suspected impaired driver sent multiple people to the hospital and shut down a section of Bethesda Avenue Monday evening.

Aberdeen Police say the crash happened around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Bethesda Avenue and Campbell Street. Investigators say a Ford Escape traveling at a high rate of speed on Bethesda Avenue collided with a Honda Accord that was pulling onto the roadway from Campbell Street.

The driver of the Accord was critically injured and airlifted by Duke Life Flight from a landing zone set up near the crash scene. A passenger in the Accord was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Three people inside the Ford Escape were also taken to the hospital. Witnesses told Moore County News that one person in the Escape became combative with first responders while they attempted to provide aid.

Beer cans were seen inside and near the Escape, and authorities say the driver showed signs of impairment. That driver was taken into custody before being transported to the hospital.

Bethesda Avenue was shut down for just over an hour as crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Authorities say the driver of the Escape is facing multiple charges.
