Driver reportedly dozes off, crashes into tree along Highway 24-27 near Cameron

A late-night drive took a terrifying turn early Saturday morning when a car slammed head-on into a tree after the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before 2:15 a.m. on N.C. Highway 24-27 near Harnett Road, just outside of Cameron.

According to state troopers, the westbound Hyundai Elantra veered off the right side of the road, sideswiping one tree before colliding head-on into another tree.

Miraculously, the driver—who was the only person in the car—escaped serious injury. Emergency crews evaluated him at the scene, but he was not taken to the hospital.

Authorities say the driver told them he had fallen asleep while behind the wheel.

One lane of Highway 24-27 was closed for about an hour as officials investigated and cleared the scene.
