As Moore County goes into a state of emergency, county officials have issued a voluntary evacuation for low lying areas on the Little River. Officials say opening the shelter is out of an abundance of caution, based on expected conditions from Tropical Storm Debby, including life-threatening flash flooding and rainfall amounts of 6-10 inches over the next few days.
Power outages and flooded roadways are possible and downed power lines and trees will hamper responses by emergency services until paths can be cleared.
The shelter will be located at 155 Hillcrest Park Lane in Carthage and will open on Thursday at noon. The shelter is accepting domestic cats and dogs only into the shelter with their human family.
Shelter space will be limited and should be only considered as a last resort. If you prefer not to stay at your residence during the storm, you are encouraged to find alternative, safer locations to shelter if possible, such as with family, friends, or a more inland location away from this area.
You are encouraged to bring enough clothing, medication, toiletries, pet food, and other essential items for three or more days.
