An early morning fire in Southern Pines has left several occupants in temporary housing.
Firefighters were dispatched to an outside fire at 5:59 a.m. Saturday to the apartments at 135 Murray Hill Road. Due to Southern Pines Fire Department being on a different call at the same time, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue were also dispatched to the scene. Once they arrived, the call was upgraded to a structure fire, sending more resources to the location.
SPFD Chief Mike Cameron says the fire started in the back area of the building, spread up a wall and into the attic. Because of it being in the attic, the flames were able to spread to multiple units.
Fire Marshals appeared to be concentrating their investigation on a wooden deck of one of the units.
All five units within the building had smoke and water damage, and at least three units had some fire damage. Most of the damage from the flames were contained to the back wall of one unit.
Four of the five units were occupied at the time of the fire. The Red Cross was called in to assist one resident, all other residents were able to find temporary housing.
No one was injured in the fire. Murray Hill Road was closed while crews were on scene.
