The Vass Police Department held a late-night checkpoint along U.S. 1 on Friday, resulting in dozens of citations and several arrests.
Officers set up under the North Alma Street overpass, monitoring both northbound and southbound traffic from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit, better known as the BAT Mobile, was on scene to help process anyone taken into custody.
The checkpoint was a team effort. Multiple agencies from across Moore County took part, including Vass, Carthage, Pinebluff, Foxfire, and Robbins police departments, along with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
By the time the checkpoint wrapped up, police had issued 55 citations. According to Vass Police Department, those included nine for driving with a revoked license, 11 for no license, two for inspection violations, 15 for expired registration, two for child restraint violations, one for an open container, three for drug possession, two for drug paraphernalia, and four for failing to carry a license.
Five people were arrested, including three for driving while impaired. One person was also taken in on outstanding warrants, and another was arrested for resisting an officer and attempting to flee.
Police say the checkpoint was part of ongoing efforts to keep the roads safe and discourage impaired and unsafe driving.
