One dead in overnight crash along Brinkley Road

A 40-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning just south of Carthage, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the vehicle was traveling east on Brinkley Road near Holly Ridge Road shortly before 1 a.m. when the driver lost control at a high rate of speed. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the roadway, went through a fence, and rolled several times.

The driver, identified as Jacob “Jake” Foil of Carthage, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to troopers. He died at the scene. Authorities say he lived nearby, and his spouse arrived at the crash site shortly after the wreck.

According to a GoFundMe set up by friends of the family, Foil leaves behind his wife and five young children.

Brinkley Road remained closed for several hours while emergency crews worked the scene and troopers conducted their investigation.
