A nurse was badly injured during an attack by a patient in the emergency department of Moore Regional Hospital on Monday night, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to help support the nurse during her recovery.

In a Facebook post, ER nurse Crystal Thompson said she is now questioning her career choice after the attack. “As I lay here tonight thinking about the road ahead of me… I question my life’s career decisions. A patient physically attacked me last night in the ER, placing me into a chokehold, slamming my head onto the floor, breaking a bone, and destroying my knee, which will likely require surgery to repair,” Thompson posted.

The GoFundMe page states that Thompson will be out of work for some time after the attack. They hope to raise funds so that Thompson will be able to support her family, and be able to pay bills while she is out of work.

A spokesperson for FirstHealth confirmed the attack to Moore County News, but could not provide more details due to patient privacy laws. According to arrest records, 35-year-old Carly Hardy was arrested in connection with the attack. Hardy faces charges of felony assault causing physical injury to emergency personnel and resisting a public officer. She will make her first court appearance on January 22, 2025.
