A medical emergency led to a frightening scene Sunday evening when an elderly man lost consciousness behind the wheel and crashed into Lake Auman, according to authorities.
The incident happened just before 6 p.m. on the Lake Auman dam in the Seven Lakes West community. Authorities say the man suffered a medical event while driving a Lincoln LS, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The car drove through a gate that normally restricts vehicle traffic to the dam, veered off the left side of the road, and ended up in the lake.
When first responders arrived, the man was still unconscious inside the car. UNC Carolina Air Care was initially requested to airlift the man, but emergency crews on scene determined he had not suffered any injuries in the crash itself.
He was transported to the hospital by Moore County EMS for treatment related to the medical emergency.
