Major road construction may be making it more difficult to get around downtown Carthage, but local businesses are still open and hoping customers will continue to make the trip.
The Town of Carthage is encouraging residents and visitors to support downtown businesses as road closures, detours and changing traffic patterns continue during construction.
“Construction projects like this can be a very difficult time for small businesses,” the town said in a Facebook post encouraging people to continue visiting downtown.
While getting to a favorite shop, restaurant or other downtown business may require taking a different route or walking a little farther, town officials are reminding visitors that businesses remain accessible.
To help, the town has created a map showing downtown businesses, public parking areas and ways motorists can reach those parking areas during construction.
The town is asking residents and visitors not to let the inconvenience of construction keep them from shopping, eating and doing business downtown.
“We hope all of our Carthaginians and visitors from other areas make it a point to come out to Downtown Carthage and not let construction get in the way of supporting their favorite local shops or discovering new ones,” the town said.
For small businesses, disruptions caused by a major construction project can make an already challenging environment even more difficult when customers assume an area is inaccessible or decide to avoid it because of traffic.
Town officials hope residents will instead make an extra effort to visit downtown during the project, whether returning to a longtime favorite or discovering a business they have not visited before.
