A Brunswick County sheriff’s deputy is recovering after being shot during an early morning encounter in Leland that left the suspect dead, according to a Facebook post from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to 1930 Mercantile Drive around 5 a.m. Tuesday, the post said. During the encounter, one deputy was struck by gunfire and hit twice. The deputy was taken for medical treatment and is currently receiving care.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect involved in the incident is deceased.
As is standard procedure, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been asked to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The sheriff’s office said no additional details are being released at this time but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
