An elderly woman was killed Sunday morning after a fire broke out at a home in the Jackson Hamlet community.
The Pinehurst Fire Department was dispatched to the 100 block of Arnette Street at approximately 4:56 a.m. The first Pinehurst fire unit arrived within minutes and found heavy fire coming from the home.
Firefighters were told by a witness that someone might still be inside the residence, according to the Village of Pinehurst. Crews faced extreme heat and heavy fire conditions as they worked to get the fire under control.
The fire was knocked down by approximately 5:15 a.m.
An elderly woman was later found dead inside the home, according to authorities. At least one other person was inside the home at the time of the fire and was able to escape.
Firefighters remained on Arnette Street for several hours following the fire, with all units clearing the scene shortly before 10 a.m. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist those affected by the fire.
Moore County Public Safety is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire with assistance from the Pinehurst Fire Department.
The cause remains under investigation. Officials have not released the identity of the woman who died.
