A 60-year-old woman who was being held at the Moore County Detention Center died Friday after she was found unresponsive in her cell, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
The sheriff’s office said detention staff discovered Judith Gossett unresponsive shortly after 10:15 a.m. during routine operations inside the detention center. Staff immediately began emergency medical procedures and continued providing aid until Moore County EMS arrived, according to MCSO.
Gossett was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
According to the sheriff’s office, Gossett had been booked into the Moore County Detention Center on June 30 by North Carolina Probation and Parole. She was being held on a charge of defrauding a drug screening test.
As is standard procedure for deaths that occur while someone is in custody, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) has launched an independent investigation into the incident. The SBI will determine the official findings regarding the cause and circumstances of Gossett’s death.
