Semi truck teeters off Big Juniper Creek bridge, Dowd Road closed

Published on

A semi truck crashed into the Big Juniper Creek bridge along Dowd Road between Willow Brook Drive and Lawhon Road in West End on Tuesday, forcing an extended road closure.

Troopers said the driver lost control going into a curve while traveling at a speed too fast for conditions. The cab of the truck ended up hanging halfway off the bridge above the creek, while the trailer stretched across the water. The crash completely destroyed the safety railing on one side of the bridge.

The driver was not hurt, but the truck leaked fuel into the creek. Moore County Public Safety responded to the scene to help contain the spill.

Due to the damage to the bridge, officials said Dowd Road will remain closed until the North Carolina Department of Transportation can make repairs, which could take several days.
