Two people were injured Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash outside of Cameron after a driver swerved to avoid a work truck that pulled into their path, according to state troopers.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of N.C. Highway 24-27 and Bass Road.

Troopers said a Chevrolet Equinox was traveling west on the highway when a Chevrolet flatbed work truck attempted to turn left onto Bass Road, pulling into the Equinox’s path. The driver of the Equinox swerved to avoid a collision, but the vehicle left the road and struck a tree head-on, causing significant damage to the front passenger side.

The driver and passenger of the Equinox were both transported to the hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.

The two vehicles did not collide, authorities confirmed. The driver of the work truck remained at the scene and was cited for failure to yield.

The westbound lane of Highway 24-27 was closed while emergency crews worked the scene. Traffic was diverted into the eastbound lane, which was used to maintain the flow of vehicles in both directions.
