A 51-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after his car ran off the road and collided with a parked dump truck in a fiery crash that shut down Highway 24-27 for several hours.
The single-vehicle crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. near Dove Road, about 1.5 miles east of the Moore County line. According to authorities, a Toyota Camry traveling eastbound left the right side of the roadway and slammed head-on into a stationary dump truck parked in a private yard.
The Camry burst into flames upon impact.
Bystanders rushed to pull the driver from the burning car. A nurse who happened to be passing the scene stopped and began performing CPR. Emergency crews said resuscitation efforts continued for more than 30 minutes before the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the Camry. No one was in the dump truck at the time of the crash.
Troopers said they are unsure why the vehicle veered off the road. The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. Highway 24-27 was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency responders worked and investigators cleared the scene. Westbound traffic was blocked at Dove Road, while eastbound traffic was turned around at Line Road.
The identity of the driver has not been released pending family notification. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
