A three-vehicle collision sent one person to the hospital, and caused traffic backups along N.C. Highway 73 at Murdocksville Road in Eastwood on Friday evening.

The crash happened during the 5 p.m. rush hour, and firefighters had to close a part of the intersection and divert traffic around the crash.

Investigators say a BMW X5 was attempting to cross Highway 73 going northbound on Murdocksville Road, and went into the path of a Hyundai Elantra traveling westbound on the highway. The impact caused the Elantra to then collide into a GMC Sierra that was stopped at the intersection.

Firefighters from Eastwood Fire Department were directing traffic at the crash scene. Drivers traveling south on Murdocksville Road were turned around to go back to Doubs Chapel Road. Murdocksville Road northbound drivers were directed to turn right onto Highway 73 towards Highway 15-501. Drivers traveling along Highway 73 were diverted south on Murdocksville Road. The roadway was cleared about an hour after the crash happened.

The driver of the Elantra was transported to the hospital with injuries that are believed to be not life-threatening.
